Originally known as New Prospect Ground till 1858, the city actually got incorporated
and chartered in the year 1858 and it went on to became the county seat of Milton
County when Milton got merged to Fulton County. It was then that the town got
renamed as Alpharetta. The name of the city is basically derived from the Greek
words “alpha” and “retta”. “Alpha” in Greek
means first and the word “retta” in Greek means town. Thereby the
city got its name of Alpharetta which in turn means, “First town”.
